About José Luis Redondo García

I work on researching and developing natural language understanding technologies for Amazon Alexa. My evolving research interests include NLP, Knowledge Representation, Web Semantic and Multimedia Annotation. My work on automatically collecting and ranking contextual entities in international news has obtained the Best Paper Award at the international conference KCAP 2015. I have worked as a Postdoc with the Ontology Engineering Group at the Artificial Intelligent Faculty, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, studying the potential of ontology learning and topic modelling techniques to make sense out of big collections of textual documents. From 2012 to 2016 I pursued my PhD with the Doctoral School Telecom Paristech, in France. As a member of the Data Science department at Eurecom Institute in Sophia Antipolis, I have been involved in different national and european projects such as LinkedTV, MediaMixer, o 3Cixty.

Working on making Alexa smarter. I contributein the following areas: (1) building an experimentation platform enabling scientist to test new AI models and techniques, (2) investigating the impact of custom data-selection methods and advanced neural-based models to boost Alexa's understanding capabilities, and (3) rapid bootstrapping of new languages in Alexa by building statistical models are able to perform better with fewer amounts of data.

He investigates how to bring semantic to the multimedia field, and in particular to Television. The objective is making TV content and Web information as seamlessly interconnected as is done today in the Web of Data: interlinked at different granularities (Media Fragments URI 1.0), searchable, and accessible everywhere and at every time.He also works on making sense out of fresh and heterogeneous data about human’s activities shared in Social Platforms.

Collaborated with researchers at CWI in developing an approach to retrieve named entities that are relevant to new stories in the Web. These entities further disclose details about these news, which were not explicitly mentioned in the original newscast. A ranking algorithm based on entity frequency, popularity peak analysis, and domain experts’ rules sorts those annotations to generate what we call Semantic Snapshot of a Newscast (NSS). We benchmarked this method against a gold standard generated by domain experts and assessed via a user survey over five BBC newscasts.

Improving Linked Data consuming techniques through the use of Ontology Alignment Techniques. The task of integrating Linked Data sources in information systems involves high temporal costs and manual-based efforts that do not bring significant advantages over conventional data retrieving methods. By using Ontology Alignment Techniques, it is possible to minimize the impact of these problems.

Development of a Java application (WeAPoN) for creating Administrative Processes and serializing them in RDF according to an ontology specifically created for this domain. The workflows are graphically designed by using Petri nets diagrams. After the serialization, Web form based applications are automatically generated out of the ontological representation in order to implement that particular administrative process.
