Profile bio

About Jessica Luton

Three basic principles guide my passion for reporting and storytelling as an independent journalist, writer and editor:- A well told story can change the world. - Every story is a health story. - Science is written in pencil, not pen. My expertise is health and science journalism, but I enjoy writing about any subject that allows me use data and research alongside interviews and human narrative to tell compelling and insightful stories. I am humble enough to ask the dumb questions and explain complicated concepts and issues through my reporting in a way that everyone can understand. It’s what I thrive on as a journalist. Beyond my experience as an independent journalist, I also excel in roles as an editor or managing editor. I am adept at planning content, helping other writers edit their work and guiding a team through publication projects to a final product. Outside of my expertise in health and science, I also have a passion for community news, whether that community is defined by location or by some other measure, such as a specific artistic or scientific community. My passion for community news is obvious in my work history. I earned my stripes in my early years as a daily news reporter for The Union-Recorder in Milledgeville, Ga. In my nearly two decades of experience, I have also written for several other small Georgia newspapers, a variety of local and regional magazines and University of Georgia Marketing and Communications. During the pandemic, I was the go to reporter for Flagpole Magazine’s Covid-19 coverage in Athens. I have a Master of Arts degree from UGA’s Grady College in Journalism, with a focus on health and medical journalism. This area of expertise came in handy as the local pandemic reporter in Athens for Flagpole Magazine beginning in March 2020. This continues to be my area of expertise these days as a freelance reporter, but I also currently work as assistant editor for the Georgia Museum of Art’s quarterly magazine, Facet, and the museum blog. My knowledge of research, health, science and data helps enhance all of my reporting, no matter the topic. It is my hope that I can continue to find journalistic endeavors that benefit the community and fulfills my passion for doing work that matters.

Listed skills include Editing, Blogging, Newspaper, Research, and 37 others.
