This project set out to optimize the electrical conductivity of a carbon nanofiber - thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU-CNF) by means of injection molding using Mold Flow Simulation software. This was achieved by controlling the carbon nanofiber alignment for use in railcar train application. This research also included setting up and automating test equipment and conducting a battery of tests on the composite to study resistivity behavior and analyzed the results using data acquisition software such as LabView and MATLAB.And finally, I was responsible for the undergraduate research assistants, to "show them the ropes" as they aided my work and the research of the other graduate researchers. These customers range from aerospace and defense, oil field, sheet metal, and semiconductor equipment manufacturing.As time progressed, my responsibilities grew to included reading through specs and datasheets from these customers to create extensively detailed routers to ensure manufacturability and proficiency of machined parts and assemblies. These detailed production plans highlight all the responsibilities for each step of production. Along with peer review of the routing and BOM, to ensure that Athena is profitable based on the quote created by the estimators. Later responsibilities included requesting quotes from vendors and placing purchase orders for specific materials, supplies, and hardware. Other projects included designing and manufacturing fixtures for CNC programmers to hold machine parts when being machined, creating prototype fixtures for the shop floor to reduce wasted production time, and increasing the safety of the shop floor workers.Finally, during the summer and winter breaks, overseeing and mentoring the interns and junior engineers, helping, and guiding them with their work and responsibilities.
