James M. Maisel, M.D., Chairman of ZyDoc, completed his retina training at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center as the Dyson Foundation vitreoretinal fellow. In 1993, he led development of one of the first prototype multimedia EMRs subsequently licensed by the Department of Defense. In medical informatics, he served as Chairman of HOST (Healthcare Open Standards and Trials) prior to its merger with HIMSS and participated in many industry and standards development efforts. He is a frequent lecturer on a wide variety of topics and a recognized innovator in the medical informatics industry. ZyDoc has won awards from the medical informatics, speech recognition, and computing industries. In 2000, their speech recognition medical language models were bundled with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical. In 2010, ZyDoc unveiled MediSapien, a web-based service that uses NLP technology to convert unstructured text into structured data for EHRs, coding and analytics. Dr. Maisel has four provisional patents in medical informatics. ZyDoc's Landmark NIH sponsored EHR usability study at Columbia documented the benefits of this fourth method of clinical documentation that is faster, easier, and less costly than keyboard and mouse, speech recognition or scribes. As Chairman of the Retina Group of New York, his practice serves as a paradigm featuring ZyDoc technologies integrated with best-of-breed cutting-edge medical informatics solutions in a production environment addressing the complex challenges faced by medical practices in the 21st century. He has served on the medical advisory board and as an educator for six pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Maisel was the JDRF Humanitarian of the Year in 2017, Co-Chair of the World Diabetes Congress. In 2019 he received special Congressional recognition for his work in speech recognition and diabetes, the Anton Banko surgical award and the Gift of Sight Award.
