I am responsible for the deployment of high-reliability, mission-cricial SDR technology. The software I work with is the wireless backbone of all communications between the Falcon 9, Dragon vehicles, and our ground stations. It is also used throughout the organization for testing applications and rapid prototyping. This work involves a variety of skillsets including software engineering, digital signal processing, FPGA design, and RF system design. Most of the work is with the GNU Radio framework, but the team also uses LabVIEW and Matlab.

I first became involved with Nanosatisfi/Spire in the summer of 2013. As a consultant I developed critical software-defined radio applications that were used for the first three satellites they launched. In addition to software development, I performed key trouble shooting and optimization that allowed them to successfully communicate with their satellites. With this success, the start-up was able to close their Series-A funding round with significant investment.With funding in hand, they hired me to provide full-time consulting. I helped them define the communications technology required for the upcoming deployment of a 20-satellite Cubesat constellation. They are currently executing on the direction of I provide during my tenure.Skills used: SDR, GNU Radio, C++/Python, RF system design, troubleshooting of ground stations in the field, FPGA design, link analysis and monitoring.

This was a multi-functional roll. I managed a rapidly growing product line in a post-acquisition environment. The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), serves a complex market that required in-depth technical skills and business acumen. Key responsibilities/activities: Pre-sales systems engineering, customer education, and assurance of post-sale customer success. This experience provided further exposer to a variety of RF subject areas including RADAR, satellite communications, cognitive radio, radio astronomy, signals intelligence, and more. Managed product road map, feature definition, and go-to-market strategy. Drove ~35% CAGR while maintaining responsibility for marketing, P&L, and marketing budget for a $15M product line. All of the normal marketing stuff – public speaking/tutorials, trade shows, on-site visits to customer, etc. Developed an open source software-defined transceiver used by many professionals in rapid prototyping environments and students in research/academic environments. Assembled reference designs and demos for customers including SpaceX. Skills used: GNU Radio, LabVIEW, C++, Python, DSP/algorithm design, GUI development, Python, FPGA Design/Verilog, Link budget analysis, etc.

As a newly minted and enthusiastic engineer, I had design communications systems for anti-submarine warfare. I was primarily involved in the modernization of the digital link between sonobuoy's and Navy aircraft like the P-3 and P-8. My drive and determination allowed me to learn quickly, and make valuable contributions NATO-wide link standardization for this application. After helping define the new standard, I assembled the first prototype transceiver which allowed the stake-holders to prove the new waveform in the field prior to consuming tax payer money.I am especially proud of this experience. The contributions I made with my team saved the tax payer millions while giving our armed forces a fighting chance at keeping our oceans safe from new submarine threats.
