I was in high school the last time I went on an organized trip. They aren’t my thing. I’m the sort to research first and then choose my own adventure. I keep my blinders off as I look up and around, amble downside streets, and speak to strangers as I eat where they do. Sure, the generic, well-trodden path may be neatly laid out, but you miss a lot of the interesting things along the way.Knowing this, it shouldn’t be a surprise my career’s taken a wiggly route. Every twist and turn brought important lessons that let me do cool, sometimes ground-breaking things, giving me perspectives and experiences often not found on prescribed routes. - My first career was in the non-profit arts, writing grants, managing a DEI program, and running $250,000 fundraising galas.- I moved into public affairs in regulated industry, landing in the thick of issues and crisis management and media relations strategies, while creating a Canadian financial service giant’s first social media monitoring program. - I managed corporate development communications for a global tech giant, keeping moving parts going for about a dozen in-progress projects while being thrust into a new deal every six weeks.- I was a social media pioneer, writing one of Canada’s first food blogs. I've since developed a side gig as a bylined food writer in mainstream media. Yes, I’m paid to write about what I eat. Regardless of where I am or what I do, three things are constant:1. I’m good at seeing connections and turning complex ideas into something people can understand.2. My favourite colleagues have a wry sense of humour, are smart, collaborative, good at what they do, and roll up their sleeves to get the job done.3. Keeping an open mind keeps me learning and helps build credibility and trust. I look forward to seeing what the next wiggle brings and welcome new projects and challenges (contract, full time, part time, or freelance).
