As an advanced consultant within the HIV Surveillance Unit, I provide analysis, report generation, and dissemination of data to guide funding, program development, and program evaluation for defined 2022 projects.

I coordinated routine surveillance activities with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I improved data quality, provided analysis, and ensured the security of HIV data. I analyzed semi-annual data using SAS to produce annual statistics and completed monitoring and evaluation reports for dissemination. Given my background in microbiology, I was uniquely positioned to establish a novel outbreak detection system in conjunction with CDC. I used this technology to detect and monitor outbreak clusters while aligning our methods to national standards.

I supervised a team of 15 case investigators conducting CoVID-19 healthcare worker interviews. We conducted in-depth telephone interviews following occupational exposure to SARS-CoV2 and discussed testing, quarantine, and contact tracing.

Dissertation: Engaging Male Partners in Home-based Couple Education and Testing for Syphilis and HIVI conducted original, independent research of nested studies within a randomized controlled trial of 1,200 women and their male partners in Kenya [R01 HD 075108-01]. Participants received couple education and testing for HIV and syphilis. I implemented research on-site in Kisumu, Kenya over nearly 2 years as a senior investigator to a research team of eight HIV counselors and three nurses. International Activities Unit, Division of Sexually Transmitted Disease PreventionI co-launched a global health initiative in partnership with the World Health Organization. I conducted reviews and analyses of national and global health policies, program guidelines, and monitoring and evaluation indicators. From these analyses, I provided technical consultation and documents to international technical experts for the development of regional strategies. My strategic planning work to promote cross-cutting HIV-syphilis screening strategies was a catalyst to declaring a top CDC Global Winnable Battle for the joint elimination of maternal HIV and syphilis, for which I received the Director's award and garnered funding for a $60,000 pilot project. Further, I engaged in special data analysis projects and with international research collaborators to provide qualitative and quantitative analysis. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention School Health Policies and Program StudyI conducted on-site, computer-assisted personal interviews of school educators on health policies and programs. Topics included nutrition, physical activity, sexual health education, and anti-smoking policies.

Virology Laboratory / California Emerging Infections ProgramWithin the Unexplained Illness and Death Working Group, I collaborated to optimize respiratory virus molecular diagnostics (i.e. SARS CoV-1) with US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Utilizing these diagnostics for research, we conducted molecular testing panels of respiratory specimens for national research and local surveillance during the SARS 2003 pandemic. I authored a laboratory protocol for Real-Time PCR of SARS-CoV1 and common respiratory viruses for national distribution. Microbial Diseases Laboratories, Enteric Bacteria LaboratoryI established the molecular surveillance system of foodborne bacteria using bioinformatics software. This included digital image capture of pulse-field gel electrophoresis and coordination of epidemiologic data for local and intrastate outbreak detection via the PulseNet Network and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
