I worked toward comparing wavefront sensing techniques using numerical simulations in the field of remote sensing. In particular, I simulated an Earth-observing satellite optical system which includes atmospheric effects and realistic detector noise sources to study wavefront sensing technique performance in comparison to the canonical wavefront sensor in astronomical adaptive optics: the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS). The focus of this simulation study was a first attempt to determine, in the context of limitations imposed by fundamental physics, how well any qualified wavefront sensing techniques perform in faithfully retrieving wavefront information as compared to the SHWFS. I focused on the the design, fabrication and testing, and system integration of coronagraphic focal plane masks for exoplanet imaging at the Subaru telescope in Hawaii. In simulation I showed wavefront control solutions for improved coronagraphic performance for these fabricated focal plane masks.
