The Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP) provide language learning opportunities for the University undergraduate and postgraduate students in all disciplines. My students chose to learn French or to improve their knowledge of the language for academic, career development, travel or other purposes. Most of my colleagues came from a country where the language they taught was spoken, contributing to the international experience of an IWLP class.

The introduction of a language test within British Airways highlighted a desperate shortage of language speakers within the UK. The Flag Award was an internal test to try and encourage young people to learn foreign languages. The test was in four parts: general conversation, reading aloud, role-play, listening and interpreting. It focused mainly on spontaneous conversation, as this reflected the interaction between staff and customers.
