About Jonathan Logan

I am driven by a desire to understand how nanoscale features such as size, dimensionality, strain and faceting can improve and increase the functionality of materials. I invent and fabricate novel nanoscale magnetic materials using techniques such as sputter deposition, e-beam lithography, RIE, and directed self-assembly. I also develop synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques for imaging 3D strain and magnetization at the nanoscale.

Accomplishments included:• Inventing a heat-assisted sputter deposition method to grow and encapsulate metallic nanoislands of oxidizable materials so that they are completely protected from oxidation.• Fabricating nanostructured ferromagnetic films for magnetocaloric applications (e.g. magnetic refrigeration, energy harvesting). • Developing synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques to simultaneously image the 3D magnetization and strain in ferromagnetic nanocrystals and thin films.
