About James M. Maloney

ENDNOTES TO BIO:(1) Admitted to practice in: New York; United States Supreme Court; U.S. Courts of Appeals for Second & Third Circuits; U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Eastern & Northern Districts of New York; Eastern District of Texas; District of New Jersey; District of Connecticut; Northern District of Illinois; Northern District of Florida; U.S. Court of International Trade; U.S. Court of Federal Claims.(2) The BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Treaty, also known as the High Seas Treaty or the World Ocean Treaty, would, among other things, create marine protected areas in the world's oceans and create a system whereby marine genetic resources (i.e., precious genetic information about species we haven't even discovered or studied very much yet) would become the common heritage of humankind and shared freely among participating nations. It will go into effect after 60 nations have ratified. The panel discussion about it at SUNY Maritime (October 25, 2024) may be viewed at https://video.tvworldwide.com/maritime/241029_Maritime_SUNYMC_Session2.mp4 or by clicking the link above ("Panel Discussion, BBNJ Treaty"). My solo portion begins about 23 minutes in.(3) In Spring 2024, for the first time since the Spring 1980 semester 44 years before, I enrolled in an undergraduate course (Evolutionary Biology with Dr. Michelson) at SUNY Maritime College. Biology courses were not available there when I first attended. I am not a graduate student, but I already earned my Bachelor's degree there decades ago, so I coined the term "ultragraduate" to describe my status.(4) HuSAC = Humanities Study Area Concentration, available at the time to Marine Transportation (deck license) majors who concentrated in neither Economics nor Management. See my letter to the SUNY Maritime College faculty (February 2000, available at https://lnkd.in/ecTbjeuS) for some of my thoughts about that program, some related ideas about the education that I received at Fort Schuyler in the late 1970s, and, especially, my unheeded warning from 25 years ago (page 20-21): "Once the core of the 'optionalization plan' is implemented . . . the 'problem' will be perceived, by the inertia-bound collective among us . . . as having been 'fixed': it simply wouldn't get . . . the indispensable immediate follow-through needed . . . The only effective way to implement . . . plans to offer the valuable extra-academic components of the Maritime education meaningfully to the new students is to have well-developed plans solidly in place for doing so [right from the start]."
