About Jonathan Mercado

With almost 10 years of experience in molecular biology and biophysics research, and commercial experience, I am passionate about supporting innovative and impactful ventures in the life sciences sector. As an Associate at First Bight Ventures, I leverage my scientific expertise, business acumen, and relationship-building skills to identify, evaluate, and facilitate investments in promising startups and supporting market education. My previous roles at IsoPlexis (now Bruker Cellular Analysis) enabled me to develop a deep understanding of the life science tools market and its applications in various fields of biomedical research and development, including cell and gene therapy. I also contributed to the revenue generation, customer engagement, and commercial team integration of our team contributing to over $2M in revenue. I have a strong background in molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, parasitology, and biophysics, which I acquired during my Ph.D. studies at Baylor College of Medicine and my undergraduate studies at The University of Texas at Austin.

Research in the lab of Somshuvra Mukhopadhyay: Manganese neurotoxicity has been well documented to lead to oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and ultimately, neuronal cell death. These neurotoxic effects have since been identified as a Mn-induced Parkinsonism. The majority of individuals experiencing these neurotoxic symptoms were exposed through their occupations, such as mining or steel industry. Recently, a familial-Parkinsonism has been discovered with individuals showing an extremely high concentration of Mn in their blood and in their brain. However, they reported no occupational or high exposure to Mn meaning that their bodies must be retaining the metal that their bodies were ingesting through their everyday diet. Genetic screens on these individuals show mutations in a protein called SLC30A10. But, no function of this protein was known. My lab has since shown that SLC30A10 is a cell-surfaced localized Mn-efflux transporter, and those previously described Parkinson's-like causing mutations block the ability of the transporter to traffic to the cell surface. My work followed this discovery by looking for the transcriptional control of SLC30A10.
