After working in financial services for seven years, I turned my focus towards becoming an empowerment advocate and community builder through my work as a creative entrepreneur in the wellness industry. Rather than being a follower of current trends, I've looked towards gaps in the industry and a decade of experience has proven to put many of my projects ahead of growing trends. In 2012, I saw opportunity in Luang Prabang, Laos, to establish a new yoga destination. Rather than taking the route of business ownership, I opted for community building, thus collaborating with businesses that already existed and rallying local as well as international teachers to create what is today known as Luang Prabang Yoga. Through our daily classes in town and our yoga retreats in what was then an off-the-beaten-path village, we put Luang Prabang on the map as a yoga destination, garnering the interest of notable magazines such as Om Yoga Magazine and Australian Yoga Journal, but most importantly, that of knowledge seekers from around the world. As a wellness entrepreneur, the draw to studio ownership does call from time to time, so in 2016, when the opportunity presented itself, I became a partner and co-owner in the first official English-speaking yoga studio in Yangon, Myanmar. Here too, I rallied my global network and experience, and grew the studio's business. I held a key role in developing in the studio's model for retreats, workshops and classes, and was largely responsible for putting it on the international regional map. I found yoga studio ownership to be rather limiting, so after parting ways with the studio in Myanmar, I invested in my current project and company, Urban Yogis Pte. Ltd., a platform for ideas, collaborations, and what I see as massive opportunities to impact how we consume yoga, how we define it, and how we educate. Ahead of the trend, in 2019 we developed a strong online learning component for this platform.As an empowerment advocate, I lead, as I always have, by being a leader, and not a boss. I teach to build greater confidence in my students, to show them their strengths, to encourage their independent thinking. I teach to give you your own wings, not to be passenger on mine. I hope that one day, we may be equal collaborators in a project that we can both bring our strengths towards.
