Like Johnny Cash, from a business development standpoint, I can honestly say, ‘I’ve been everywhere, man.’I’ve led and managed business development and client support teams for several decades at start-ups, pre-IPO, small private, LARGE public, and anywhere in between businesses, which, along the way, contributed $100’s of millions in new revenue growth.As the saying goes, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. It’s a wonderful life to never ‘work’ but still get paid for what you do!Unfortunately, professional success doesn’t necessarily prepare you for life-altering personal circumstances.In 2020, I was diagnosed with advanced cancer. My OSU oncologist was clear, concise, and direct: I was not long for this world if the prescribed treatment(s) did not work.Simultaneously, my mother was nearing the end of her life. Bedridden in a Detroit hospital, knowing she would soon be leaving this world to enter eternity with her Lord and Savior, all she wanted was to spend her final days in the place she loved most – her home.An organization I was completely unfamiliar with, Hospice, made her wish a reality for her to be home with her family when she passed. What a blessing! Hospice made all the difference for the entire family – especially my mother.Fast-forward four years. My new nickname is NED: No Evidence of Disease. For all practical purposes, God granted me a new life! Thankfully, this time provided an opportunity to reflect on how to best use the time ahead of me: continuing to pursue personal success for myself or choosing significance to help transform other’s lives.The choice was easy. My personal experience with hospice, coupled with the coming tsunami our country will experience in the overwhelming number of adults reaching retirement age and beyond, motivated me to apply my career success and experience to significantly impact an increasingly minimized and overlooked demographic: aging adults.Significance. This is why I chose Ohio Living. I now help create strategic relationships with leading businesses and corporations with a heart for aging adults, with one of the nation’s most trusted and respected 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, multi-site senior living organizations.I love my new life and what I do with Ohio Living for our residents and home-based patients. So, technically, I’m still not ‘working’ but somehow managing to get paid.And, yes, it’s still a wonderful life!
