Designed semantic text extraction platforms to understand how Wayfair's suppliers, customers, and competitors are describing over 10 million unique products, which drove a reduction in time required for suppliers to add products as well as iterative catalog cleanup to remove erroneous values. Incorporated outputs from other data science workstreams and platforms to enhance the functionality of the text extraction pipeline by taking advantage of scraped competitor text descriptions. Co-ordinated with machine learning engineers and analysts to scale and put platforms into production while ensuring results were digestible and available in appropriate formats for diverse internal use cases. Utilized Scrum-based methodology to deliver concise yet thorough summaries of current progress and blockers in daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, 1-on-1 meetings, etc.

Worked with Chris Dede and Tina Grotzer on the EcoMOBILE, EcoXPT, and EcoMOD projects that utilize augmented reality software and virtual ecosystems to explore how ecosystem science instruction and authentic scientific inquiry can be more engaging and effective. Mined log files from immersive virtual worlds to assess performance and provide dynamic feedback. Spearheaded experimental design, implementation, and analysis of a laboratory study that collected millions of data points from participants (eye tracking, electrodermal activity, and posture observations). Co-designed a teacher dashboard visualization of student progress for classroom use. Conducted extensive data analysis in R and Python of survey responses, log files, and sensor data.

Developed long short-term memory and conditional random fields models to identify multiple product materials from messy supplier-provided text descriptions. Achieved F1 scores from 0.84 to 0.99 across 7 classes (~37,000 products) to demonstrate generalizability. Coordinated with project stakeholders to ensure the utility of the final model and to send model results for validation by offshore data analysts. Prepared model for deployment for catalog cleanup (fixing erroneous materials tags) and product addition (automatically populating materials tags when suppliers add new products) alongside existing models.

Instruction was differentiated according to the specific needs of students and collaboration with experienced ELL faculty and learning specialists maximized results. Taught the scientific method as a lens for problem solving that could be applied to any problem or scenario. As mastery of formulating hypotheses and testing them increased, students became self-directed investigators and explicit directions in the lab were less necessary. The course emphasized chemistry’s connections to other academic disciplines and modeled how the everyday world could be understood through physical and chemical interactions, focusing on enduring understandings of the field rather than rote memorization.

Redesigned the year-long course into a four-week program for highly motivated rising sophomores. Discovery lab exercises and student-centered learning techniques stimulated pupils during six hours of daily instruction. At the end of the session, 100% of students passed the school’s standard final exam with a B or above.
