About Jesse M. Rubenstein

My research integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and environmental niche models with citizen science data, focusing on environmental conservation and biosecurity challenges. With over a decade of experience as a GIS educator and researcher, including time as a university faculty member, and a fifteen-year engagement with Cornell’s eBird Program, I've developed innovative geospatial models that enhance our understanding of these challenges. My fieldwork has included leading avian censuses in the cloud forests of Ecuador and actively participating in research projects across the United States, which have deepened my insights into practical conservation.Currently, as a PhD Fellow at Lincoln University, I focus on invasion biology and biosecurity, with a particular emphasis on quarantine and noxious weeds, as well as the evolving weed diversity in New Zealand’s crop seed trade. My research is conducted in collaboration with the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries, international inspection agencies, and major seed companies. These efforts aim to identify invasive, herbicide-resistant, and prohibited weeds in crop seeds worldwide, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of global biosecurity challenges.
