Not everyone can say that a group of soccer tykes set them up for business success. I can. While coaching my daughter’s soccer team from the time she was four until she was eight years old, I learned not only patience, I learned the foundation to solve nearly any business challenge: Listen, analyze, communicate, implement, and pivot quickly as needed. I learned to communicate to an individual level. They all listened and learned differently, varied on how much they wanted to be a part of a team and had different motivations (score a goal or pick flowers). I had to find a better way to be successful in getting them all focused on our one goal. I learned that I enjoyed watching people improve and gain satisfaction in bettering their skills. I have gained an insatiable curiosity and drive to make things better. I love finding the underlying trends or issues to resolve business blocking challenges quickly. Going in boots on the ground problem solving, analyzing data, digging deep, inspiring ideas, architecting strategies then executing is the exciting part of what I do. It’s what I am good at...I’ve long since hung up my coaching whistle, but because of those teams, I won’t ever retire from mentoring and finding a better way to get us all facing and going the same way focused on our goal.
