Jef van der Zel, PhD, MSc started in dental material research in 1977. Research areas: metal-ceramics, press- and sinter-ceramics, CAD/CAM. He is best known for the development of Carrara/Golden Gate metal/ceramic system (over 100 million units worldwide). In 1989 promotion at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), on metal-ceramic systems. Invented the first laser section scanner for the dental lab in 1990. First CAD/CAM software for crowns and bridges in 1995. Virtual articulation software in 2000. Implant planning software 2002. Developed a non-chipping porcelain for zirconia in 1999. From 2004-2014 he was extraordinary professor Computerized Dentistry at the University of Amsterdam. Research directed towards “life-like crowns by CAD/CAM” on the basis of zirconia (Primero). In 2013 a controlled clinical study of Primero crowns and bridges was started and the results after one and six years could be reported as clinically excellent. Jef is knight in the order of the Dutch Lion. At the moment he is international consultant with his company DENTALXS.

Chief Executive OfficerDentalxs Consult Jan 2002 - PresentDENTALXS.COM developed the Primero Lab System for the automatic veneering of histo-anatomic zirconia substructures with any CAD/CAM system. With the Primero System 45.000 units were placed in patients since 2013. A controlled clinical study at the University of Amsterdam was performed and no chipping of the Primero porcelain was recorded and after 6 years the clinical experience is very positive (J.M. van der Zel. Der aktuelle Stand des Primero-Systems, Quintessenz Zahntech 2018;44(12):2–10). The veneering is realized by first milling the die in an easy millable plastic block, placing the zirconia substructure on the die in the block and then filling the remaining space with paste porcelain by vibration. After drying the porcelain, it hardens and the block is placed back in the machine to mill the final contour of the porcelain. The porcelin is then fired on the zirconia as usual.

Professor Computerized DentistryAcademic Centre For Dentistry Amsterdam 2004 - Oct 2014Starting in 1988 with the deveolpment of the first laser section laboratory scanner of gypsum models, our team developed the CICERO (Computer Integrated Ceramic Restoration), one of the first CAD/CAM systems, producing alumina veneered crowns in functional static and dynamic contact with the oposing dentition. In 2000 came zirconia and now we have again a digitally veneered restoration: PRIMERO CADVeneer crown and bridges, based on a BioZyram zirconia core in 16 VITA Classical A1-D4 colors.
