In my current position, I complete testing of manufactured solid-dose drug products as well as the drug substances used to manufacture those products. These tests primarily include dissolution, assay and related compounds / degradation products. The work in our lab centres around pre-commercial formulations, re-formulations of existing products and deficiency responses. Stability testing, in-process and initial testing of these products is among the primary objectives of the group. As formulations are becoming ever more sophisticated to accommodate various drug release demands, the testing of these products is becoming increasingly complex. The second mandate of the group is validation of analytical methods pertaining to the testing of these drug products. The lab is fully in line with cGMP and ICH guidelines and operates at an extremely fast pace to meet expectations for submission and customer demands. As a chemist in this group, I am responsible for completing all testing scheduled to me, and everything involved in that testing including but not limited to instrument troubleshooting, managing time effectively and maintaining data integrity without sacrificing testing completion time.

My graduate project focused on studying 2 specific proteins that bind the native pheromone of the gypsy moth, an invasive insect in North America. In an attempt to further understand the olfaction process in these insects, the structure of these proteins was probed as well as their interaction with fatty acids. Fatty acids are highly prevalent in the olfaction system of these moths. The project also involved undertaking characterization of the moth's lipidome. It was concluded from this work that the C-terminus of the 2 proteins alter to a more alpha helix structure in a hydrophobic environment. Further, pheromone binding affinity of these proteins is strengthened in the presence of fatty acid aggregates. Finally, at least 12 long-chain fatty acids were identified and the structures of 3 glycosphingolipids were partially characterized. These lipids play an important role not only in the lipid bilayer containing the ion channels responsible for odorant detection, but in the binding of phermone to the proteins surrounding that bilayer.
