I co-founded the software consulting and staff augmentation company in 1998 and grew the client base from 2 to 23 in two years. Later, In 2001, I led a team of hardware engineers and software developers to create a comprehensive PC-based remote digital surveillance system. At a time before "Digital Video Recorder" and "Voice-over-IP" were household words, the product replaced VCR-based surveillance systems for several institutional customers. I collaborated with the project team (on short-term plans and initiatives), end-users, and cross-functional business units to create and implement software applications impacting internal and external processes.

I was hired by Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield as an independent software consultant to work on a client-server sales application targeted for use by agents in the field. As part of a development team consisting of several other contractors, I developed the application using PowerBuilder and an Oracle database back-end.

I joined the Carolina Coupon Clearing division of Inmar as a Senior C++ Developer. In addition to writing software using C++ and VB (along with an AS/400 back-end running DB2 and RPG), I co- managed a development team responsible for producing software that assisted in the management of chargebacks associated with coupon processing. As part of that responsibility, I had the opportunity to gather feedback from the end-users, whose job it was to hand-key information from each coupon into the system. Eventually, I began traveling across the country (along with the VP of Operations) to engage customers and gather requirements for new product initiatives.

HSS Vending Distributors hired me as an Operations Manager for a new Private Payphone Division. The company had recently invested in several hundred payphones and contracted with local business owners to strategically place them in high-traffic areas around Pittsburgh and the outlying regions.Because managing the payphone network required more technical skills than traditional vending, the company charged me with the responsibility to get the division up, running, and profitable. Shortly after taking over, I implemented a system to manage, process, and bill our zero-plus dialed calls (those calls made using credit cards or calling cards) directly, rather than "forwarding" them to a 3rd-party company. The collected surcharges from this change alone made the division profitable within four months. I eventually grew the division to over 700 payphone locations, developed and implemented proprietary payphone management software, and established an Operator Service Center to sell processing services to other payphone providers.

I sold copiers, fax machines, and related office equipment to local businesses in and around Pittsburgh. I received professional sales training from Toshiba America Information Systems, as well as Ricoh USA. Although the work was hard and involved long hours, it taught me a lot about the sales process, overcoming objections, goal-setting, and selling against the competition. I consistently met sales quotas and led the initiative to rep a new line of a facsimile product called "JetFax."
