My technical journey began around 1983 when I became hooked on coding and its endless possibilities. The company had recently invested in several hundred payphones and contracted with local business owners to strategically place them in high-traffic areas around Pittsburgh and the outlying regions.Because managing the payphone network required more technical skills than traditional vending, the company charged me with the responsibility to get the division up, running, and profitable. Shortly after taking over, I implemented a system to manage, process, and bill our zero-plus dialed calls (those calls made using credit cards or calling cards) directly, rather than "forwarding" them to a 3rd-party company. The collected surcharges from this change alone made the division profitable within four months. I eventually grew the division to over 700 payphone locations, developed and implemented proprietary payphone management software, and established an Operator Service Center to sell processing services to other payphone providers.
