About John Newby

Freedom, Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Scripture are my guiding lights.Small & local communities are in the fight of their lives. The ‘Truly-Local’ mission is to assist local communities, honest media, local businesses, and patriotic citizens in building upon their current synergistic strengths to enhance the vibrancy and economic conditions of their community. In order for each of these four components to survive, they all must thrive. You rarely see a thriving media or business base in a dying and non-patriotic community, it is nearly impossible. By finding the synergies between all four, we help build a solid foundation that supports the entire community. Just as a rising tide lifts all the ships in the harbor, the rising of a community, the honest media, local business and patriotic citizens lifts the entire community. My weekly column, "Building Main Street, not Wall Street" runs in 60+ news media products and is a start to building these local synergies. The synergies created through this synergistic column and process enhance the economic/revenue opportunities for entire communities.National and local media has changed dramatically in my 30+ years in the industry, going in different directions. While many of the National media companies have become government mouthpieces, we still have many local media companies trying to do a honest and great job. Those local companies can make a real difference in your community, it is those we focus on with Truly local. I am blessed to work with Econ Development teams, Main Street orgs, Chambers and Community orgs leading to a better understanding of the synergies possible between communities, business, honest media and their citizens.Saving communities, business, honest journalism, and patriotic citizens is my passion. This is ONLY accomplished when all four come together forging common synergies. They MUST balance traditional strengths, new strategies and true transformational disruption. Rules that govern honest media, business and community survival have changed! What was stability is now a rapid change. What was tradition is now enhanced innovation. What was consistency is now creativity, vision and shear determination. Incremental change is dead on arrival, only those changing through HIGHLY disruptive innovation will thrive. Are we willing to change?Communities are staring in the mirror at the "innovators dilemma", we must ask ourselves, can we overcome the traditional culture in our business or community? The real question becomes, what is looking back at us in that mirror?

    Truly-Local Aug 2017 - Present
We assist local communities, business and media build synergistic strategies. These strategies create stronger foundations that inspire all three to greater heights. In today's climate with less capital and human resources available, I'm prepared to assist in bringing projects to full fruition. In essence, take a project from the strategy table to completing it with little disruption to the current staff.I have worked extensively with communities, businesses and media companies on all levels to create greater vibrancy, thus enhancing their economic vitality. This is done by working with key stakeholders on various strategies. I have worked or consulted for the Omaha World Herald, MediaNews Group, Pioneer Newspapers, Small Newspaper Group, Sandusky Newspapers, Hearst Corporation, Utah Media Group, Starved Rock Country Region, Main Street and many other organizations. It has been my opportunity to assist all of these organizations to meet and exceed their goals and expectations. On the media side, I've assisted media companies to strategize on print frequency alternatives, postal options, new revenue solutions, audience growth & retention, loyalty/membership platforms, sales strategies, marketing & branding strategies, database creation, public relations strategies, events, new magazine creation, promotions, contests, digital signage, how to attract tourism dollars and much more.On the community front, we've assisted communities in marketing, tourism and economic development. I have a unique belief the future of local media is tightly linked to the survival and future of the communities they serve. A vibrant community leads to vibrant media, when coupled together, the community and business base explode with upward momentum. United they stand, divided they fall! By working together, we watch as the local media can find new life and their communities feel a long lost vibrancy.

  • Muskogee Phoenix & Tahlequah Daily Press - Cnhi
    Group Publisher
Muskogee Phoenix & Tahlequah Daily Press - Cnhi Dec 2015 - Aug 2017
I was brought in to Muskogee (and then Tahlequah) to assist a local community newspaper that had lost it's way and was floundering. With a great staff and a wonderful community coupled with an aggressive expense/revenue strategy, we were able to stabilize the newspaper in an industry that has struggled to do so. We created several new local and regional magazine titles, added new events such as concerts and garage sales, we created new digital products and added a subscriber loyalty platform to mix. We focused our efforts on staff training and hiring the best that we possibly could. Additionally, we altered our distribution processes, our printing strategies and many other expenses that hadn't been evaluated for far to long. We once again established ourselves within the community by becoming more involved in the community through economic development and visibility, a must for every news-media company.Through these efforts and many others, we were able to fair far better than our CNHI counterparts throughout the state and region. When I left due to the health of our son, it was left in good shape and ready to meet the demands of the new economic realities.

  • Starved Rock Country
    Publisher / Founder
Starved Rock Country "Tourism & Economic Development" Sep 2012 - Dec 2015
Starved Rock Country was/is an economic development arm/brand developed by John Newby and The Times of Ottawa, IL. too promote the Starved Rock region throughout the State of IL. In 7 years, this region-wide collaborative branding effort has helped to increase tourism from approximately 2,000,000 to nearly 4,000,000 visitors each year. It was carried initially by a new full-color, perfect-bound magazine entitled "Starved Rock Country", but has since expanded to a multiple strategic approach.Over the years, it experienced a dramatic expansion of the brand beyond the magazine to include several new family oriented events such as our Starved Rock Country Concert Series, Starved Rock Country Marathon, Starved Rock Country Golf Championship, Starved Rock Country Outdoor Sport Expo and along a host of other events too drive tourism and visitors to the region.Starved Rock Country has become the poster child for creating tourism in IL. The effort is an attempt of improving the economic vitality of the region. As this happens, as they say, "Rising water levels raise all the ships in the harbor."
  • The Times
    Publisher
    The Times Oct 2007 - Dec 2015
With the economic downturn in 2008, we were able to effectively managed our bottom-line maintaining our pre-2008 levels and margins. This despite some of the highest unemployment levels in the state. Through all this, still named one of "Editor & Publishers" "Ten Newspapers Doing it Right" in 2014.We took the approach that news-media companies must become digital magnets within the community, virtual newsrooms, audience synergies needed to be magnified and new revenue streams created. All non-core, non-revenue producing functions needed to be considered for outsourcing allowing a more focused concentration on the core mission and cultivating new revenue streams in non-traditional ways. Those included not only digital, but e-commerce, events, big (small) data, loyalty and so much more!Understanding readership is rapidly reaching a tipping point, traditional audience methods no longer suffice. We utilized several innovative audience loyalty strategies allowing us to grow or maintain our audience (and circulation) and it's critical contributions to the bottom-line each year. In addition to reaching our growing readership audience via print, we created a robust social media strategy second to none among newspapers our size across the country. We were home of 32,000+ Facebook fans and nearly 2 million monthly page views - rare for a newspaper our size. The Times mission was to reinvent how we did business. Our business model needed to adapt to the realities of the marketplace which mandated reduced expenses and new revenue streams coupled with the top talent needed to drive increased revenue opportunities.Despite those economic challenges, we found that there was never a better time to be innovative and creative in our industry. The most innovative/creative ideas are uncovered during challenging of times. I saw vast opportunities for those willing to step out of the box seizing opportunities presented.
