I am proud co-founder of the Positive Living Skills initiative in Australia, working with my business partner and founder of Positive Living Skills, Cath Shaw, to develop and distribute much needed early prevention mental wellness skills and resources to educators, young people and their families in Australian communities. Inspired by our early work with Dr Terry Orlick PhD, we created a suite of pre-planned curriculum mapped evidence based resources that support educators in Early Learning Services, Family Services and Primary Schools to feel more confident to teach practical, mental wellness and resilience skills to children, with common language concepts and resources reaching home to families in Australian communities. If young people aged 3-12 can learn practical skills that support a positive focus and empowered self- direction while building healthy peer support networks, before they reach high school and adolescence, then we have a chance to positively impact the growing and alarming statistics of mental illness, bullying and violence that is draining our communities. To find out more about how Positive Living Skills is supporting educators children and families visit www.positivelivingskills.com.au. Life skills and mental wellness education must start early and it must start NOW.

We collaborated with psychologists and educators to create ‘resource pool’ style programs, professional development opportunities and family resources, with concepts backed by decades of research. Our belief is that prevention in mental health care MUST begin with children as young as 3 years of age learning habitual skills for wellbeing BEFORE there are signs of mental challenges. The PLS programs have been independently reviewed and listed in the Be You Programs Directory as meeting the minimum evidence requirements set by Be You and have been awarded a rating for evidence and implementation. They support educators to feel confident in teaching common language mental wellness skills while meeting their other outcomes. The resources and dedicated educator wellbeing professional learning support children and educators to build practical skills for emotional wellbeing, resilience and healthy relationships and resources reach home to families. We are focused on supporting educators students and families to build their skills to understand themselves, manage their emotions, maintain healthy relationships and strive to reach their unique potential, without adding any additional work to time-poor and overwhelmed educators. We are actively seeking alliance partner organisations who would like to collaborate for preventative positive outcomes, so together we can take action to implement meaningful solutions and influence real change in our communities.
