Highly experienced Bioinformatics leader with over 30 years of research and analysis in bacterial, fungal, viral, human and plant genomic and genetic datasets. Trained in mathematics, statistics, computer science and the biological sciences, focuses on understanding the effects (both intended and unintended) of applying software tools to biological datasets. Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and Microbiology Society member. Measures of Esteem include Honorary Professor in Computing Sciences at the UEA, Editorial Board Member of Briefings in Bioinformatics for 25 years, Grant Panel member for UKRI, BBSRC and the US NSF, and Program Committee member for major bioinformatics conferences such as ISMB and WABI.PI/CoI of numerous grant-funded projects, including major genome sequencing initiatives. Currently the curator of UKHSA's NCTC3000 dataset (BioProject PRJEB6403), one of the world's largest long-read bacterial datasets. Supervisor/co-supervisor of ~30 PhD and MSc students and manager of ~15 post-doctoral fellows or post-graduate data scientists, leading to a wealth of new knowledge, computational approaches and software tools for genomic and genetic datasets. Co-founder of UEA's MSc in Bioinformatics course, currently teaching as a Guest Lecturer on the MSc in Bioinformatics course at the University of Edinburgh (Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics module).
