About Jo Healey

Tell the stories that matter, better. An experienced senior journalist, I train journalists, media teams and aid workers to become trauma aware: protecting themselves, their contributors and their employers.I devised BBC in-house training in Trauma Reporting and work with hundreds of news and media professionals globally from the UK to the US to Ukraine. I also work with students of journalism, having guest lectured at Oxford, London, Princeton and Boston. The author of Trauma Reporting, A Journalist's Guide to Covering Sensitive Stories and the UNESCO document Safety of Journalists Covering Trauma and Distress, Do No Harm, I have presented my work to the UN in Bangkok and the WHO in Geneva. I train reporters and content producers how best to work with victims, survivors and vulnerable interviewees and how to look after their own well being while they do so. The training programme is CPD professionally assessed and accredited and gets terrific feedback Here's how I can help:* Effective, engaging interactive, live online training sessions to become trauma aware* Sharing the insight of interviewees who chose to speak to journalists at tough emotional times. They reveal what helped and what harmed. It is powerful and effective to hear and generous of them to share.* Clear guidance at each step of the reporting process: approaching people, establishing professional relationships, interviewing, filming, and following up their sensitive stories* Key skills to protect your mental health and wellbeing while covering people's trauma and distress* Informed guidance from fellow professionals including Louis Theroux and Jeremy BowenSome reviews, many more on the website:"This course if fantastic..it absolutely has enhanced my journalistic practice""I've never known a course and a trainer have such an impact on a bunch of journalists.""Amazing, focused, accurate. A fabulous learning session.""Jo has an amazing ability to connect"Get in touch, it'll be lovely to hear from youwww.traumareporting.com

The book follows the process of what reporters do when a sensitive or tragic story breaks or emerges, applying good practice at each step of the way. It is informed by many news correspondents and documentary makers including Louis Theroux. Unusually, people who chose to talk to journalists at tough times in their lives share constructively in the book what helped and what harmed them.
