Profile bio

About Jo Malcolm

My superpower is my breadth of experience. The combination of having been a journalist for 15 years and then using those skills and learning new comms and media management skills has been the foundation to becoming an expert in media/comms work. Working with the All Blacks and other high profile clients for the past 15 years has helped me to hone and practice my skills in very high stress and high stakes environments and under immense pressure. These experiences have made me very capable managing a crisis or situations involving the media and any issues that may arise. I am a former TVNZ journalist with 12 experience in News and Current Affairs. I moved into Sports Media Management in 2001 with the Crusaders Rugby team and then joined the All Blacks from 2011 to December 2023. I have been to four Rugby World Cups. I teach Visual Story Telling and Broadcast Journalism at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand where I have been a lecturer since 2007. I also teach strategic communication skills and digital storytelling. I mentor and provide workshops on communication skills to CEO's, organisations in the private and public sector and I speak at conferences on Crisis Communications. I'm a very quick thinker and can give you a plan when a storm is on the horizon. I have a decade of experience in this field and I love the phrase "Smooth sailing doesn't make a skilled sailor." I have been in many rough seas and weathered them all. I am an enthusiastic and passionate team player. I like inspiring those around me to be better and I love learning off others. I get all of my work through word of mouth and reccomendations. I want to feel like I am adding value and making people better at what they do. I am also the best person to take over the tiller when you're in the middle of a storm. As I am a solo practioner, you get me plus all my experience and IP. I tailor my workshops to each client or group to make sure I am delivering skills that are immediately usable and add value.

Listed skills include Sports Media, Crisis Communications, Rugby, Sports, and 15 others.
