CurrentIn Control is a national charity working for an inclusive society where everyone has the support they need to live a good life and make a valued contribution. It operates as a 'community for change' that aims to work directly with people and their families who need support, influencing and improving the delivery of self-directed support, developing and testing innovative ways for people needing additional support to be in control of their lives and measuring the impact of self-directed support and personal budgets on people's lives. It is currently funded by government bodies such as the Department of Health, Department for Education and NHS England as well as through councils, clinical commissioning groups, provider organisations and sector-related bodies such as Think Local Act Personal, ADASS and ADCS. It also receives grant funding for various discrete projects.I have been on the Board of Trustees for seven years, becoming Vice Chair in 2016 and Chair in 2018. The role includes helping to formulate decisions on direction, finance and strategy, particularly around potential new projects and influencing campaigns. There is rigorous control of funding decisions and audit of the work undertaken to ensure we meet the objectives of the charity and are sustainable into the future.

This included large research projects of over £250,000, training aids such as videos and learning packs and smaller grants to support nurses to explore areas of improvement for the benefit of the wider NHS. The role included Board level challenge and scrutiny of both the fund and its application, including meeting fund auditors, analysis of project viability and performance review of projects including value for money and fit with the organisation's strategic goals. It was also central to my role that ensure that high clinical and financial standards were maintained and audited in projects so maintaining the reputation of the organisation. This involved working in partnership with other national and international nursing organisations to deliver programmes through a series of long term funding relationships.

Director, Ambulance Services Network

The network's aim was to be an influential system leader for urgent and emergency care, to represent members with politicians, national bodies and in Europe and to support members to continually improve care for patients and the public. As Director , my role was to plan, develop and implement the work programme within budget, working with the Boards of member organisations and with stakeholders, both national and local, and maintaining high standards of both financial and corporate governance.
