About Joachim Monkelbaan

With over 20 years of experience at the intersection of trade, climate change, and investment, I am deeply passionate about driving international collaboration towards sustainable development. Throughout my career, I have worked with business leaders and government stakeholders to address critical global challenges. My expertise spans a wide range of topics, including the circular economy, renewable energy, climate mitigation, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), the circular carbon economy, energy efficiency, carbon markets, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the US’ Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). I also focus on carbon competitiveness across key sectors such as infrastructure, transport, buildings, and energy supply. To tackle this complexity, I have developed award-winning methods in systems thinking, leadership, design thinking, and collaborative group dynamics, recognized by the Global Challenges Foundation with an award. My additional specialties include integrating artificial intelligence for sustainability, fostering supply chain sustainability, ESG strategies, advancing climate action, navigating geopolitics, and building impactful public-private partnerships. I am also skilled in project management, stakeholder relations, communication, and network building, leveraging these capabilities to influence change and foster innovation.
