Joan Gimenez, Phd Email and Phone Number
Doctor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a strong passion for structural bioinformatics, specializing in uncovering the complexities of proteins through advanced computational approaches. Currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow, I am focused on advancing research in protein engineering, with interest in plastic degradation, chemoenzymatic peptide synthesis, and biomaterials, including spider silk at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), my research is dedicated to advancing sustainable solutions through biotechnology and computational science. I specialize in the design of computationally-engineered proteins, to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges: (micro)plastic degradation. By harnessing the power of supercomputing, I am developing innovative bioengineering approaches to create efficient, scalable microbial systems capable of breaking down plastic waste.I specialize in merging classical techniques such as Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, and protein-ligand docking with AI-driven tools to model proteins and design cutting-edge enzymes. With a strong background in experimental methodologies, I am adept at bridging the gap between computational and experimental approaches. This approach allows me to innovate at the intersection of computational and experimental protein scienceI aim to bridge the gap between computational biology and real-world applications. I am passionate about leveraging cutting-edge technology to solve global environmental problems, and I look forward to collaborating with industry and academia to bring these solutions to the forefront

Investigate the human enzyme AKR1B10 as a therapeutic target against cancer. AKR1B10 is an efficient retinaldehyde reductase enzime induced in various types of cancer that has been associated with tumorogenic phenotypes in different tissues and cell lines. AKR1B10, which presents a higher retinaldehyde reductase activity for all-trans-retinaldehyde than any other human AKR, may be relevant in controlling the first step of retinoic acid (RA) synthesis. It has been proposed that up-regulation of AKR1B10,resulting in a RA depletion, may lead to cellular proliferation. Purification of new recombinant enzyme AKR1B15. Substrate specificitycharacterization, kinetic analysis and inhibitor screening and design of selective inhibitors combined with structural modeling and Structure-activity relationship. -
