Summer internship. Worked at Genesee County Public Health office in Flint Michigan cross-checking data, creating infographics, and getting a firsthand look as to a county office of public health’s daily responsibilities on top of the water crisis.

In my final role at the RYSE center, I became the community health intern. Here I would develop and eventually facilitate my own food justice and nutrition education curriculum, called Know Your Bite--a partner piece to another program at the center called Grow Your Bite (a garden-based curriculum).

In my next role at the RYSE center, in addition to hosting tours and helping to plan social and community events, I engaged in and sometimes helped facilitated conversations on social justice topics and issues. These ranged from the importance of youth empowerment/advocacy to environmental injustices such as air pollution, and how it relates to communities like Richmond which houses the Chevron Refineries.

As one of my first real jobs as a high school student, I helped tutor fellow RYSE members on school subjects within my scope of knowledge. In addition to academic support, I provided career support: assisting with resumes, looking up relevant employment opportunities and posting them on our job wall. I outreached for current programming happening at the center: cold calling, tabling, walk-ups. I helped plan social and community events for local youth, often advertising events at my high school. Lastly, I helped host tours around the center to adult stakeholders and youth who wanted to become members, all while maintaining a clean and healthy environment throughout the center.
