In this position, I've gained experience in conducting mental health and substance use screenings to identify HIV+ individuals in need of behavioral health services. Additionally, I develop individualized education lessons to de-stigmatize behavioral health related issues, increase understanding on the benefits and purpose of treatment, present options for care, encourage the importance of wellness as it relates to HIV care, and encourage engagement into appropriate treatment.

Assisted New York State Department of Health Staff in conducting an on-going formative assessment of low-income Spanish-speaking immigrants living in Suffolk County as part of a practicum project for my Public Health degree. Collected and analyzed qualitative data to understand the behavioral, social, and cultural factors related to Latino immigrant health and health disparities in Suffolk County.

Assisted Qualified Health Professionals in determining the appropriate level of care for clients entering the OASAS Licensed Chemical Dependency Outpatient Non-Intensive program through weekly case conference meetings and case presentations. I developed, implemented and conducted a Relapse Prevention Psychotherapy group for clients needing intensified treatment in the Outpatient Chemical Dependency Program. I also facilitated weekly educational workshops to clients on tobacco, drugs, HIV/STIs, domestic violence, DWI, addiction and how addiction negatively affects familial and social aspects in an individual’s life.

Conducted HIV, Hepatitis C and STI Urine Screenings while implementing evidence based intervention model RESPECT and providing Counseling, Testing and Referrals.
