A University of Waterloo alumni with a degree in Civil Engineering, Joanna found her calling in the transportation engineering field, initially working with two major Toronto area engineering firms, later moving into the public sector with the City of Toronto. As Manager of Transportation Planning, she focused on inter-regional transit, leading many major initiatives. She later moved to the Toronto Transit Commission (2009-2018), as the Third Party, Planning and Property Director of TTC’s $3.2B Line 1 Extension that opened for passenger service in 2017. She is currently the Vice President, External Approvals and Implementation at Crosslinx Transit Solutions, the consortium delivering the $5.3B Eglinton Crosstown LRT under a P3 contract to design, build, finance and maintain the new 22 km rapid transit line connecting to TTC Lines 1 and 2, providing new rapid transit service to many diverse communities along the LRT line. Joanna’s goal throughout her career has been to make communities and cities move better with an eye to accessibility and equity, while ensuring that transportation infrastructure is well designed and safe for all who use it. Her collaborative work with developers and the City in integrating transit infrastructure and surrounding built form has led to world class results in Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, a showcase for transit oriented communities. In 2018, Joanna received the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) H. Robert Burton Distinguished Service Award for her work and leadership with ITE and in the transportation field over the last 30 years. She has held a number of key executive positions within ITE; was the first woman elected to the Canadian District Executive, the first woman President of CITE, and member of the ITE International Board. She continues to work on ITE International Committees and is a Fellow of ITE. She is a past Leadership Advisor for the University of Waterloo’s Toronto Alumni Chapter and past member of the Advisory Board of the ULI’s Toronto District.A member of the Women’s Championship Team of the Urban Land Institute, Toronto, she continues her support of women in the infrastructure field and has shared some of her story of delivering big transit projects on the ULI Electric Cities Podcast. She recently became a mentor with the Prosperity Project, supporting and mentoring young women who are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 pandemic. She regularly guest lectures at Universities across Ontario, covering a wide range of engineering, planning and infrastructure experiences.
