About Joanna Murphy

I founded Rethink Legal to help solve the challenges that I experienced first-hand during 20 years working in private practice and global in-house roles: as an in-house lawyer, frustration at the time spent on low-level, repetitive tasks and the same questions being asked by the business over and over again; as external counsel, the inability to influence the things that really matter to the client; and as a client myself, the knowledge that hourly billing does nothing to drive efficiency and simplification.I firmly believe that:• it is possible for small businesses to have access to experienced, pragmatic, business focused legal expertise, even if you don’t need (or have the budget for) a dedicated lawyer. • it is possible for lawyers and their clients to have open conversations about fees and the value delivered by legal services - and in many cases, to adopt alternative fee structures such as retainers and fixed fees; and • it is possible to simplify legal processes, manage risk, improve efficiency and reduce cost, either by making changes internally (technology helps here), or by leveraging external managed services. Sometimes you just need a helping hand to get started. Rethink Legal bridges the gap between business and law, acting as outsourced general counsel, sparring partner, commercial legal advisor, and legal operations manager - with the flexibility of an external provider.     Thomson Reuters Global Resources (TRGR) is the Swiss-based, IP-owning entity for the Thomson Reuters Group. I managed a team of 6 and was responsible both for day to day legal and corporate governance matters relating to the Zug operation (c.120 staff) and for the legal implementation of the group's tax, finance and transfer pricing strategy. In this role I advised on multiple significant asset acquisitions and tax and finance restructuring projects, oversaw the protection and management of intellectual property, developed templates and contracting policies, and established and maintained legal and financial operating policies and controls to meet tax audit requirements. I collaborated globally with senior tax, finance and business leaders on strategic projects including the evolution and redesign of TRGR's organisational structure following the OECD's BEPS initiative. During this period of change, I was appointed interim Managing Director and subsequently managed the implementation of the new operating model, redesigning governance policies and managing talent flow to meet evolving legal and tax requirements. Through the implementation of centralized contract management, document automation, electronic signature and legal workflow technology, I delivered significant process improvements and cost savings, improving the management, maintenance and auditing of inter-company contracts among 200 group entities.
