HATCH is an 8-week job training program that combines life skills workshops and industry-standard culinary and hospitality training to empower opportunity youth to lead self-sufficient lives. As Development & Operations Director, Joanna manages fundraising, partnerships, and the day-to-day of the organization.

For her first go as captain of the Battleship - during a year like no other - Joanna managed a campaign that made a smooth transition to digital neighborhood meetings and other tech-savvy grassroots efforts, including the Mayor’s first-ever text banking. Mayor Battle was reelected with nearly 80% of the vote, despite the presence of three challengers for the seat.

Huntsville, Alabama Area

A millennial who is fascinated by local government, Joanna enjoyed the role of Governmental Affairs Liaison for the local REALTORS association. She was responsible for keeping the membership of the association educated on local ordinances and raising the profile of the association among Huntsville, Madison and Madison County government entities while equipping REALTORS to recruit, train and endorse candidates for local races. She assisted a team of passionate, involved REALTORS as they worked together to push public policy that encourages homeownership and protects the rights of private property owners. Joanna also managed all special events at the Association, including the annual REALTOR Expo, monthly member luncheons, and more. While on staff at HAAR, Joanna joined the Leadership Team in a major effort to reorganize the association and was a driving force on the Strategic Planning Task Force, encouraging the group to focus on external relationships.

Alabama

Putting her people skills and organizational abilities to work for Tommy Battle’s campaign for Alabama’s governor was a highpoint of Joanna’s career. She managed everything from volunteer coordination (1,000 volunteers across the state) to fundraising events to statewide signage (more than 6,500 signs of all sizes), while wearing whatever hat was necessary for the day (graphic designer, office manager, social media monitor, etc.). Tommy’s bid for governor wasn’t successful this time, but the campaign team met their vote goal and increased statewide name recognition by a huge margin.

Joanna served as boots on the ground for the incumbent candidate for Huntsville’s mayor as he ran for a third term. She performed everything from event planning for 30+ neighborhood meetings to direction of Battle Works signage placement. The campaign team’s work resulted in a landslide win for the candidate by the largest margin in Huntsville’s history.

In the first event-related position in her career, Joanna managed rentals of lighting and service packages for local, regional, and national customers. Projects ranged from $25-$15,000 and included customers from all over the United States and Great Britain. Joanna learned the ropes of cold calling, building a sales plan and managing a team of lighting technicians.

Fresh out of high school and hired because of her acting and kid-wrangling skills, Joanna became instrumental in the founding of Sunflower Station. She assisted in all management duties of the preschool; included database building, bookkeeping, and basic secretarial duties, in addition to teaching a 45 minute segment on drama 3 times a week and serving as the main substitute teacher.
