I empowered and enriched the lives of young adults aged 19-42 years old with complex needs including physical and mental disabilities. I provided both physical and emotional support to clients and their family members. I worked using a person centred care approach. I assisted the young adults in their day to day lives and enabled them to attend therapy sessions to improve their physical and mental health. These included hydrotherapy, music therapy, and speech therapy. I worked in conjunction with therapists, medical professionals, social workers and family members regarding any issues relating to the young adult. As part of my role I had to fill in detailed care records daily. This role was very intense and required a responsibility. I was calm, kind and empathetic. As well as being enthusiastic and approachable in order build positive relationships with my clients. Thanks to this role I also know basic Makaton due to many of the young people having communication issues. This role presented new challenges every day and it was important that I was flexible and able to roll with whatever the day threw at me . As many of the young adults lived on site it was important that I took part in activities that helped with their daily mental health. I offered them a choice and allowed them to have a voice as I recognised the importance of this as it allowed them independence and expression of their identity, providing them with dignity and respect. I needed to be organised within this role. Many young adults needed multiple medications daily and I needed to follow a strict time management schedule to ensure all medication was given on time. Thanks to this role I am aware of the importance of Safeguarding and risk assessments.. As part of this role I have knowledge regarding confidentiality, the mental capacity act 2005, and the equality and diversity act 2010, that I followed daily.
