I retired in December, 2023, after 34 years as CEO of the Fortune Society, an advocacy and service organization serving justice impacted people. Each year from 2018 through 2023, I was recognized by City and State as one of the 100 most effective nonprofit executives in New York State. During my years at Fortune, I built a strong, diverse and passionately committed leadership team, and we:- increased annual funding from $700,000 to $60 million and staff size from 22 people to over 500,-Created a robust array of wraparound services, currently serving some 11,000 formerly incarcerated persons each year.Notable programs that received national recognition included HIV services in the 1990s that were funded six times by HRSA as Special Projects of National Significance and an award- winning continuum of housing for formerly homeless and formerly incarcerated people that includes emergency, transitional and permanent, supportive, housing and currently houses 800 people on a typical night.When I left the position of CEO, it was with a strong succession plan that included a robust fund balance to enable Fortune to effectively run programs despite chronically late government, funding, and a strong successor, Stanley Richards, who had been with the agency for 30 years, as well as a strong and diverse leadership team.I am currently working part-time for Fortune as historian, documenting our housing, history and model, as well as taking on a small number of consulting opportunities to support nonprofit leaders in their work.

CEP is now known as CASES. I developed their felony Alternative to Incarceration programs, which are still going strong.
