Profile bio

About Joanne N. Smith

Advocating for the rights of Black, Brown and Indigenous cis and trans girls and gender non-conforming/non-binary youth is my life purpose. I create conditions for intergenerational leadership to flourish so that the young people who are historically left out of our democratic process better inform civic engagement, programs, data, & philanthropic resource allocation. Most recently, our participatory governance process led us to launch the Young Women's Initiative in 8 states where my leadership facilitated a $30M commitment from government and philanthropy to invest in community-driven recommendations. Over the past 5 years, I worked cross-sector with philanthropic partners to shift $180M in resources, so the resources are directed to cis and trans young women of color & GNC/NB youth of color serving orgs and institutions. Featured on the cover of YES! Magazine, I've shared my personal and family experience of intersectional feminism. As a queer, first generation, Black Haitian woman, my commitment to intergenerational justice is personal, professional & lifelong. The last 17 years of leading GGE, has allowed me to serve on the steering committee of Black Girl Movement & as a member of Move to End Violence, an initiative designed to strengthen the collective capacity to end gender-based violence in the US. I’m an alumna of Hunter Graduate School of SW & Columbia Institute for Nonprofit Management. With GGE staff, I've co-authored Hey Shorty: A Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment and Violence in Schools and on the Streets. GGE’s work to combat sexual harassment in schools is featured in the 2014 documentary Anita: Speak Truth to Power. We’ve received many awards including the Ms. Foundation 2018 Gloria Award as a Woman of Vision, a Commendation from NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, & Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies −Local Women Leading Change award. We incubate movement strategies as fiscal sponsors to #BlackLivesMatter NYC & #metoo movement

Listed skills include Program Development, Nonprofits, Fundraising, Public Speaking, and 34 others.
