Joanne Varughese is a Lead Behavioural Data Scientist at Orbit. Colleagues describe her as "Working with Joanne was awesome. Well, she consistently demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication, making significant contributions to our understanding of cyber security topics from research to product. Joanne was my right hand in our annual cybersecurity attitudes and behaviour reports. Her contribution to the detailed data analysis ‘earned’ her a place in co-authoring two of the reports! She has a meticulous approach to data analysis, visualisations, and design. Most of all keeping the data trackable, organised and ‘error’ free. Joanne also single-handedly designed a research piece, from planning to data collection and write-up about generational differences in cybersecurity, which was published on the company's website. She translated complex data into engaging and understandable content and was always open to feedback, improving drafts as the time went on. She has a collaborative spirit and ability to work in multidisciplinary and senior team. She was never afraid to take on a challenge and investigate, which always led to a high quality solution. She also mentored her successor (new intern) through their daily functions and ensuring a smooth transition into the team. Her willingness to share knowledge and support others speaks volumes about their character and professionalism. During her time at CybSafe, Joanne was assigned as a researcher for one of our multi-functional product teams (a ‘squad’). She conducted user research to understand customer’s needs and pain points. She presented her findings to the squad and suggested recommendations and next steps. She also carried out a small research project exploring people’s barriers to module engagement, which was commended by the CEO himself! As a member of the Science and Research team, one of Joanne’s main contributions has been her work on CybSafe’s Annual Cybersecurity Attitudes and Behaviour report. This is one of our most widely read publications, conducted in collaboration with the National Cybersecurity Alliance. This year, it involved a very large data set (over 6000 survey respondents!) and research analysis was complex. Her hard work and attention-to-detail were crucial in ensuring that the analysis was completed on time. I was also impressed with Joanne’s creativity. She came up with the idea to run a survey study exploring Gen Z’s attitudes to cyber security. Based on her findings, she wrote a CybSafe blog post which has been read and shared within the cyber community. Overall, Joanne excelled in her communication skills, creativity, collaboration, enthusiasm, work ethic, and ability to work at a high standard. She was a valued team member of the Science and Research team as well as the wider company.
