Dr Vamvakopoulos is an academic clinician by training. He is currently Clinical Specialist Service Lead at the Manx Centre for Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism (Manx CEDaM), Noble's Hospital, Isle of Man.His clinical practice encompasses all aspects of Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine, with a particular interest in endocrine autoimmunity (type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disorders, primary adrenal insufficiency etc) and interventional endocrinology (eg ultrasound-guided thyroid interventions). He also participates in the on-call rota for Internal Medicine, where he has a particular interest in medical disorders during pregnancy (Obstetric Medicine). His research activity largely reflects his clinical interests.Dr Vamvakopoulos originally trained as a biomedical scientist, then as a research immunologist, making substantive contributions in those fields. He studied Medicine in Birmingham, UK, where he also completed his general and specialist clinical training. His first substantive Consultant post was at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, where he was Clinical Lead for the Inpatient Diabetes Service whilst also helping to run the Diabetic Foot Service. In these roles, he oversaw the introduction of electronic insulin prescribing and day-to-day management of a large inpatient specialist caseload (~400 referrals monthly); and contributed to the introduction of digital pedal wound mapping (Silhouette system).
