I work primarily at the intersection of contemporary political theory and history of political thought, focused on varieties of feminism.My dissertation is titled, “On Patriarchy: Origin Stories in Contemporary Feminist Thought.” In this project, I explore the various ways that feminist thinkers have “diagnosed” the problem of patriarchy, using their stories of how we got to this point to better understand where they think we ought to go from here. The dissertation covers a wide range of thinkers, from the 14th to the 21st centuries. In addition to my dissertation research, I am engaged in a second project which examines the relationship between feminist understandings of sexuality and our current legal institutions. In pornography, standard modeling contracts often require a performer to surrender rights over their public image and sexual media in perpetuity and across mediums. As a result, pornography has been described by some performers as a “life sentence” - a phrase which, if true, violates some strong intuitions we share about the importance of autonomy in sexual activity. In my first peer-reviewed publication, for the feminist journal Hypatia, I use the framework of “affirmative consent” to argue that such contracts violate performers' rights to sexual autonomy, and ought therefore to be considered objectionable.
