Writer And Editor, John Glenn College Of Public Affairs
CurrentAt the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, I write content for the college alumni magazine, Public Address, as well as internal and external communications. I am the editor for the college's advancement team to ensure engagement, quality and consistency across communications related to college news, events, podcasts, website content and more. I also assist with website content management.
Editor, Sustainability Institute At Ohio State
I was a writer and editor for print and electronic publications for the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State, where I formulated the university's sustainability stories and thought leadership. Ohio State is a comprehensive land-grant research university with hundreds of faculty in sustainability, thousands of passionate students, an enduring land-grant mission, and a strong commitment to sustainability in its campus operations, dedicated to leveraging its knowledge to enable more sustainable and resilient communities, including our state, nation and the global community. My responsibilities included writing and editing internal and external communications, overseeing website content management, producing electronic newsletters, developing marketing materials, managing social media, and assisting with special events and the implementation of communications strategies for the institute.
Writer, Editor And Interim Director, Communications, College Of Engineering
In June 2011, interim director of communications was added to my title and job duties at the College of Engineering. In addition to overseeing the communications office, I was the editor at the college, where my primary responsibility was to produce the college magazine, News in Engineering. I directed editorial focus, managed the budget, wrote most of the content, took some of the photos and edited the publication, which circulates twice a year to 50,000 alumni and friends of the college and once a year as a research edition to approximately 10,000 select readers, including peer deans and chairs. My other duties included student intern supervision, media relations and internal and external publication production.
Associate Editor, Ohio Today
As assistant editor, I wrote feature stories, profiles and university news for this 140,000-circulation alumni magazine. I coordinated and edited assignments with students and freelancers, developed story budgets and shared proofreading and editing duties with the editor. My job responsibilities also included the magazine’s Web site, Ohio Today Online (www.ohio.edu/ohiotoday), for which I helped determine the initial design and function and coordinated the content. In addition, I participated in media and employee relations planning for University Communications and Marketing.
Senior Editor
SBN (formerly Small Business News) was a 22,000-circulation, monthly publication for business executives. I determined content and wrote in-depth stories and short features about successful local business owners and best practices. In addition, I proofread pages, determined layout, supervised freelancers, oversaw photography and covered the Statehouse beat. I was promoted to senior editor in 2001 after having served as associate editor since my hiring in 1997.
Associate Editor
Serving as one of two of the paper’s associate editors, I assisted in coordinating the newsroom daily operations, assigned stories to reporters and made decisions regarding news budgets. I was specifically responsible for the local community section of the paper, published at least weekly and produced by a staff of eight correspondents. In addition, I edited the copy and completed page layout on deadline for the front news sections and inside community and business pages. Prior to my promotion to this position in February 1997, I was the police and courts reporter and covered Fairfield County’s law enforcement agencies, fire departments and the criminal court system.
Editor
As editor of several community weekly newspapers, I managed a freelance staff and wrote and edited news stories about local government, schools, events and issues. I covered Columbus and numerous surrounding suburbs and coordinated major projects, such as an investigation into stormwater management, for the entire group of 26 papers.
