Consultant

The Apsche Center

Leesburg, Virginia

The Apsche Center is a residential mental health care facility for adolescents. Mode Deactivation Therapy, or MDT, is provided for adolescents with trauma-based and behavioral issues. MDT is applied in individual and family-based settings and was specifically developed by Dr. Jack Apsche to address a population and problems that are typically viewed as difficult-to-treat. The MDT methodology contains the Validation, Clarification, and Redirection (VCR) step, which is unique and integral to the MDT approach. MDT also incorporates mindfulness practices, as well as selected elements from Third Wave Cognitive Therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).Basic comparative research studies have indicated the promise that MDT shows in effectively treating adolescents with complex problems, but more in-depth research is required to (1) provide a larger empirical evidence base, (2) understand how and where the different components of MDT contribute to therapeutic change, (3) proliferate knowledge among practitioners. The ultimate objective is to apply the deeper understanding to develop the methodology further in order to maximize effectiveness and durability of treatment.I am keen and honored to contribute to the process that will improve psychotherapy for troubled youths and their families.
