About João Sio
I am a structural engineer with a PhD from Imperial College London, researching on the robustness of building structures. I have been involved in academic research for almost a decade, during which enabled me to not only learn and develop technical skills such as programming, finite element analysis and 'sinking deeper' within the field that I am passionate about, but also understand the importance of striving excellence at work yet delivering results in an efficient, consistent and concise manner. Along with a responsible and self-managed personality, I am now looking forward to contribute as team player within a professional environment with good work ethic, vision and collaboration spirit, in achieving the goals set out by such professional environment and concurrently refining my professional and personal skill set.

Visiting Researcher
CurrentDeveloping enhancements to the recently proposed design-oriented robustness assessment methods. Continuing to facilitate the supervision of MEng final year students.
Phd Candidate
Research in Disproportionate Collapse of Reinforced Concrete Building Structures. I have facilitated a member of the project team WG6.T2 commissioned under mandate M515 of CEN/TC 250 to develop robustness guidance for the next generation of the Eurocodes. This led to the publication of a novel horizontal tying force method, which is aimed at replacing the current prescriptive tying rules, in the peer-reviewed journal 'Engineering Structures'.I've also facilitated the supervision of two MSc and MEng students on their final year research project, responding to queries, informally assessing their written report, and providing effective feedback, which led to the successful completion of their studies.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Modules assisted:- Computational Engineering Analysis (finite element analysis)- Mechanics (concepts of force, moment, equilibrium, deformable bodies and mechanical energy)- Structural Mechanics Year I (statically determinate structures)- Structural Mechanics Year II (stiffness and cross method) - Structural Mechanics Year III (plastic limit theory)- UG and MSc Structural Dynamics (EOM, free and forced vibrations of SDOF and MDOF systems)
Graduate Structural Engineer
- Commercial development in London - concept design of the building frame with consideration of structural sustainability. Active coordination with the wider design team (GEO, MEP, VT, Fire, Transport and Sustainability), also including correspondence with the external architects. Successful delivery of RIBA stage 1 and near completion of RIBA stage 2.- Feasibility study (RIBA stages 1 and 2) for two high-rise buildings in London - sizing of steel transfer trusses.- Technical review of proposed fit-outs for buildings throughout London - load balance and structural assessments against expected load uplifts, footfall (vibration) analysis for a proposed gym and laboratory, CAT I checks for openings in reinforced concrete beams and masonry walls. Drafting of corresponding reports.- Technical support for customers using the FEA analysis software Oasys GSA and AdSec.
Research Assistant
- LASTEICON - European project funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, where I performed the detailed design of planar steel trusses entailing novel strengthened joint connections and numerically assessed their performance against conventional trusses in ABAQUS. I facilitated the successful operation of the project, drafting interim reports and managing/coordinating two newly-joined graduates. Additionally, the outcomes of the detailed design then led to the expected completion of the experimental tests.- INNOSEIS - European project funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, where I performed numerical simulations and drafted a design guide for an innovative anti-seismic device. Outcomes were disseminated through the drafted guidance as well as organised workshops/conferences, increasing the recognition of such device by the wider structural engineering community.- Buckling of unilaterally constrained columns by complementarity eigenvalue analyses - I developed a solver in MATLAB determining the buckling loads and corresponding mode shapes of a column supported by unilateral constraints. The outcomes of this work led to the publication of a paper in the peer-reviewed journal 'International Journal of Solids and Structures'.
