João Canto Gomes Email and Phone Number
A highly motivated immunologist with extensive expertise in T cell biology, virology, and chronic diseases. Experienced in both foundational and applied research, I bring a strong track record in scientific project management, grant acquisition, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. My research contributions in HIV, tuberculosis, SARS-CoV-2, and multiple sclerosis have been pivotal in advancing understanding of immune cell dynamics in chronic diseases. Recently, I granted funding to lead a project as a Principal Investigator to explore T cell dysfunction in Multiple Sclerosis, while actively seeking to translate my research into therapeutic applications in the biomedical industry.

Research FellowIcvs - Life And Health Sciences Research Institute Oct 2023 - PresentBraga E Região, PortugalI am focused on T cell dynamics and immune function in multiple sclerosis (MS). Recently, I secured an FCT-funded project as Principal Investigator, where I am investigating the impact of blood plasma factors on T cell function in individuals with MS. This project builds on my doctoral research and aims to deepen our understanding of T cell roles in MS pathophysiology. In addition to my research, I am teaching Microsoft Word and Excel to PhD students from Mozambique through the EU-funded ERASMUS+ PhD4Moz program, fostering skills that support their academic and professional development. -
Visiting ResearcherUniversity Of Oxford Jul 2022 - Dec 2022Reino UnidoI was involved in a study that identified HLA-E-restricted CD8+ T cell responses to SARS-CoV-2 peptides in convalescent patients, revealing their critical role in viral control alongside classical T cells (DOI: 10.1126/sciimmunol.abl8881). I contributed by generating T cell transductants, with T cell receptors identified via single-cell RNA sequencing, used in functional assays. This work enhances our understanding of immune responses to viral infections and suggests novel therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes. -
Research FellowshipIcvs - Life And Health Sciences Research Institute Sep 2017 - Feb 2018BragaI contributed to a research team investigating immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) glycolipids in active and latent tuberculosis (DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2021.727300). Our study demonstrated that specific Mtb glycolipids elicit distinct immune responses, notably reduced monocyte expansion in latent TB, suggesting an immune hyporesponsive or tolerance pattern induced by Mtb infection. My role focused on analyzing high-dimensional immune profiling data, which allowed us to identify unique response patterns, including T cell activation markers. This research has advanced our understanding of immune modulation in TB and may contribute to therapeutic strategies for immune-related diseases.
