I am an accomplished researcher and innovator in transportation, spatial planning, construction, and real estate. I have already worn a few hats in a 15-year long career – researcher, innovation consultant, head of innovation, and executive manager – and have successfully shifted from academia to industry and back to academia (as an invited professor within the scope of the MIT Portugal Program).I obtained my PhD in Spatial Planning and Transportation from the University of Coimbra in 2009. As a researcher, I have published in top scientific journals in these fields such as Transportation Research Part A, Environment and Planning B, European Journal of Operational Research, etc., and have collaborated with reputed researchers from MIT, University of Toronto and TU Delft.As an innovation professional, I have led the creation of a new business unit for a niche market in the construction sector (1M in revenues within first year), built an international partnership for joint business growth (in the Iberian peninsula), been an advisor of a 5M euros knowledge transfer project on the use of digital technologies for open data and smart transportation, launched a business center in a science park (4M euros investment), and supported the set up of a small business angels group focusing on early stage tech-based startups (50k-100k euro tickets).I am currently an assistant professor at the University of Coimbra in Innovation in Transportation and Urbanism and a researcher at CITTA – the joint research center of the universities of Porto and Coimbra for Transports, Territory and Environment.In my free time I actively contribute to build a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in my region, mainly through alphaCoimbra – a bottom-up community of entrepreneurs, designers, and technologists – and invest in a small portfolio of tech-based companies such as Localista.tech, Eventopedia.com, and Beeline.co.I am very much interested in creating more livable cities, shaping the future of transportation and real estate, and in fostering university-industry collaborations.
