Startups Made in Spain in partnership with Google was a research project that gathers and presents key information regarding setting up a business in Spain. The aim of this project was to empower entrepreneurship and foster startup communities throughout Spain.SMIS conducted an in-depth research through surveys, interviews and studies covering important topics that define the startup ecosystem of a country, such as, the ease of setting up a company, getting capital, finding talent, dealing with bureaucracy, regulatory environment, community support and market barriers to entry. The research comprehensively covers entrepreneurs (especially international tech entrepreneurs) in Spain and also other important entities like investors, financial institutions, accelerators, educational institutions, incubators, media, government initiatives, etc. The data was then processed into collective reports providing the tools to entrepreneurs in making important business and product decisions. These reports presented the overall ‘health’ of the startup ecosystem (regionally in Spain), detailing the resources, benefits, advantages and of course the challenges that Spain presents to entrepreneurs and businesses in general. Also, these reports voiced the collective concerns, highlighting the required changes (e.g. in the regulations, access to foreign capital, etc.) to further develop entrepreneurship in Spain. In March-April of 2015 the SUMIS co-founding team organized events in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and London to speak about the key findings of the survey results.
