What better way to discuss the engineering complexity of our transportation system than through visualizations of our proposed projects? Our branch specializes in the rapid prototyping of transportation projects for meaningful engagement with our stakeholders and communities. Our 3D animations, 360 Tours, and before and after simulations support highway system and complete streets project development from inception to construction.

I’m a landscape architect at Caltrans. What?! What do you do?I like to think of us as the face of Caltrans. We advise on the planning of our highway system, we’re responsible for the aesthetics of our structures and we design and manage the 72% of our land that isn’t pavement. Planning = advise and assist in incorporating complete streets elements in communities, enhance community engagement through visualizations. Aesthetics of structures = develop the designs for bridge railings, bridges, sound walls, barriers, and vista points. Manage land (72% = 252,000 acres) = stormwater management, erosion control, guard against billboard proliferation, monitor visual resources through visual impact assessments, replacement planting, water conservation, maintenance, wild fire fuel reduction. Manage the Clean California beautification program and work with regulatory agencies on implementing mitigation planting and associated monitoring.

Responsible for; guiding stakeholder participation in master planning workshops, advising on best practices of federal installation site design, and developing computer visualizations for stakeholder engagement.

One of three members of the San Carlos RDRC (Residential Design Review Committee). Serve as the design professional member responsible for the review and approval of residential development in San Carlos.

Act as key advisor to installation commander, public works officers, and base civil engineer on planning, urban design and landscape improvement issues at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH).Led federal effort at JBPHH to implement Area Development Plans/Installation Master Plan. Coordinated teams of consultants, public work officers, project engineers and facility managers in collecting community and stakeholder input to aid in the detailed design of sustainable streetscapes, public open spaces and recreation areas.

Member of Greenbelt Alliances' compact development team. Responsible for reviewing, and if appropriate, endorsing bay area developments that meet the standards of Smart Growth. The team looks specifically at density, affordability, sustainable construction, and transit oriented design. Duties include meeting with developers, architects and city officials during the review process. If project is endorsed, I present to city council or other public body in support of the project highlighting the Smart Growth elements.

Developed CAD management guidelines and standards for office wide implementation. Synthesized input from leadership and production staff in formulating best practices for creating efficiencies in the development of construction documents.

Key design collaborator with Principals for a variety of project types; corporate campus, educational institutions, podium structures, multiple LEED certified projects, speculative office developments and public parks. Led staff members through schematic design, city processing, design development, construction documentation, bidding and construction administration/observation. Well experienced in managing client expectations and project finances.Thorough and personable coordinator with all design team consultants.

Responsible for designing the user interface and specifying the functionality for the Construction Management/Administration segment of the buzzsaw application. Developed Prototype interfaces from research and collaboration with design and construction industry focus groups as well as consulting with industry leading experts.

Landscape designer/project manager for residential projects throughout the North Bay.Highlights included co-hosting an episode of “Landscape Smart” on HGTV detailing one of the firm's projects and completing research for traveling scholarship awarded at U.C. Berkeley.

Summer project included preliminary grading and design studies for Sydney Olympic Park project.
