I worked daily with the Director of Communications, Publications Manager, and the Director of College Relations to draft and edit new content for the web site, including written articles, short video segments, and an extensive audio presentation of student thesis work. As the primary content editor for the web site I collaborated with the ITS department to develop and manage new technical resources for the College, including extensions to the capabilities of the web site; designing and launching Facebook, Twitter and other social media efforts; and many more communications-related tasks.The “Special Projects” portion of my title covered my work as the College’s Event Manager. I organized campus-wide efforts to host special events such as Family Weekend in the fall, managing contributions from the Student Life, Academic Affairs, Admission, Institutional Advancement, Dining Hall, Physical Plant and other departments to pull off a highly structured multi-day event which was central to annual development efforts. I also worked very closely with the Provost and executive office staff and numerous local vendors to plan and execute a premier fundraising event on behalf of the Provost and the Department of Institutional Advancement.
Traveling up to 30 weeks per year I helped to plan, organize and stage one-day and multi-day educational conferences at hotel venues across the country. In working closely with the Director of Meetings and the President, I received extensive training and experience in working with catering staff, event site staff, outside vendors, temporary on-site workers, and event participants; I also put my customer service skills to good use working with our VIP guest speakers. Our educational focus during my tenure was on Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and I was fortunate enough to work with several highly regarded clinicians and researchers actively studying the issues surrounding autism and Asperger’s Disorder. Both in the office and on the road, our small team was dedicated to providing world-class service and support to our guest speakers and event participants, frequently making and modifying travel plans, lodging, transportation and other needs for multiple concurrent events, while also maintaining highly accurate records for accreditation review purposes. I became highly skilled at working productively wherever I found myself, be it an airport departure lounge, hotel lobby, event site, or, as on several memorable occasions, a Cape Cod beach. When not traveling I assisted the President with drafting correspondence and other administrative projects at the home office; during the spring of 2007 I wrote a series of grants which generated over $50,000 from major pharmaceutical corporations to support our independent educational programs.
