I lead BrightCarbon, the presentation design agency for enterprise. When I was much younger I thought I would become an academic, or a lawyer, or a political consultant - I did not see this coming. I love my job. Sometimes for fun I'll find myself playing strategy/management games on Xbox or PC - Civilization or Game Dev Tycoon - and then realise that making decisions about when to invest, how to focus, how to compete - is what I do at work too. With fewer barbarians. I'm a reluctant entrepreneur. I helped set up BrightCarbon when that was a safer option than staying at my previous employer, which had just gone bust. But I've grown into it, and am proud that we've got things this far. I'm also a centre-left capitalist. I enjoy building a creative agency that offers a decent working environment, try hard to treat our employees well, and believe that business should be a force for good. I was the driving force behind our decision to join 1% for the Planet - we donate one percent of our revenue to environmental causes. So, I'm pleased that we've done a lot, but we can always do better, and thinking about how is one of the things that keeps me up at night. I hardly do any client work nowadays, but I used to absolutely love working out what a company's messaging should be. I may still be really good at writing sales presentations, and love challenging group-think. I can sometimes see things others can't. I don't do much messaging any more, but could be persuaded for an interesting project. I spend a lot of time looking at what others in our space are doing, trying to learn from other agencies, and thinking about the environment we operate in.
