Selected to be a REU SURF intern in the LeadID / High Throughput Screening Lab under Principal Investigators: Timothy Spicer and Louis Scampavia at Scripps Research. Learned every aspect of lab operations and testing, including working with cell cultures and very high tech equipment. The experience exposed me to laboratory equipment engineered to significantly reduce the time it takes to perform testing as well as biological applications. It is amazing how robotics/engineering works together to create a smooth/high functioning lab in drug discovery. My individual assignment consisted of demonstrating how 3D spheroid formation of liver cells is more replicable of in vivo toxicity effects of the drugs in comparison to the current 2D monolayer hepatocellular toxicity testing being done. I am also a contributing author in a textbook Drug Discovery and Development (Third Edition) on Chapter 4: High-Throughput Screening.
