An award-winning architect, planner & urban designer, John Cheek brings an unusual breadth and depth of experience to the practice of architecture, planning, urban design and redevelopment. He has worked in all phases of the development process, from concept through planning, design, construction and marketing in the US, the UK and the Middle East.His practice focuses on designing and delivering urban infill, higher education and science/technology projects, innovative quality-of-life programs and related initiatives aimed at enlivening downtowns, urban districts and campuses. His work has ranged from rehabilitating historic structures like the Southern Mutual Building in downtown Athens, GA, to complex, large-scale commercial and institutional urban infill projects like the Social Security Administration Regional Headquarters in downtown Birmingham, AL, The North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness at UNC-Asheville and NASA's Building 4602, a materials testing lab at Marshall Space Flight Center.John also works closely with state and local governments and private developers to create urban redevelopment plans, design guidelines, zoning ordinances and implementation programs that assure design excellence becomes an integral component of both their policies and of their implementation tools. His experience as an architect practicing at both the building and civic scales brings a welcome level of practicality to all his projects. John is a committed team builder who combines the skills and training of a goal-oriented architect-planner and the collegial, hands-on approach of a seasoned manager to build teams who can implement projects and programs that embody clients’ goals, needs and desires.
